As you probably know, we’ve recently built a number of major new features into the OpenX Ad Server and we’re excited to let you know that they are now available in the OpenX 2.7 Beta release.
Here’s what you’ll get with this new release:
- Plugin Framework — With plugins, you can easily extend OpenX functionality in a variety of different areas. A number of plugins are already under development by OpenX as well as various community members.
- OpenX Market — Through the new OpenX Market plugin, which is included in this release, you will be able to participate in OpenX Market seamlessly within the Ad Server. OpenX Market enables you to maximize your ad revenue by letting advertisers bid competitively to show their ads on your site.
- UI Improvements — We’ve updated the user interface to improve the workflow and look-and-feel of the product. Check out the new navigation menus and easier to use inventory management screens.
- Improved Scalability — Thanks to a new and improved data logging architecture, you will be able to more easily scale your ad server.
As you get started using OpenX 2.7 Beta, please send us your feedback to help us as we develop our stable OpenX 2.8 version. Stay tuned for more exciting news coming soon…

I was so excited to hear about the OpenX Market integration, it will make life easier for people wanting to host the ad server but still use the market feature.
Looking forward to playing with this.

Well done guys. The plugin framework is really going to opens things up. It makes extending OpenX easier and more future proof, here are my two big predictions…
Exciting new plugins
All those features you want are more likely to be written now that anyone can create reliable plugins rather than dodgy patches which break on upgrades and violate the GPL.
OpenX is THE ad platform
Anyone needing a platform to build their custom ad networks / applications can now build on the OpenX plugin framework rather than hacking the ad server. This makes maintaining your custom applications so much easier.
Congratulations to the OpenX team and especially to Monique, Chris and Andrew for this development.

I’m just wondering where I’d find the documentation about how the openx2.6.4/plugins directory is now called openx2.7.29-beta/extensions..
I’ve just uploaded 2.7 beta onto my server, and have had to think quite a bit about where I migrate my geotargeting database too.. Is this just a dir name change, or is something significantly more fundamental going on?? I’m really hoping that by doing an upgrade everything (including georeferencing to cities) still works!!
Does anyone have any comments to make about this?? Tips, tricks..
Comment by Duro — February 12, 2009 @ 4:52 am
In particular, I’ve noticed that the openx2.7.29-beta/extensions/geoTargeting directory doesn’t contain anything.. Whereas the openx2.6.4/plugins/geotargeting contains the plugin code for reading the Maxmind *.dat products..
(In particular: GeoIP and ModGeoIP subdirs, and default.plugin.conf.php and Geotargeting.php files)
Has this been left out intentionally - does 2.7 build contents during upgrade/install?

I’m excited about openx 2.7 and the stable version 2.8 because i want to participate on the openx market on all the websites i create. Is there an easy upgrade from 2.6 that dosn’t change any of my existing inventory zones and banners?
Comment by Tom — February 18, 2009 @ 1:19 pm
@Tom: Yes! The 2.8 release will feature an easy upgrade path from any prior version of OpenX; you won’t have to change existing inventory or banners.

Ok,
So I’ve upgraded to 2.7 beta but now my statistics page won’t load at all?
I receive the following error:
any fix?
OA_Admin_Menu_Section::check() [function.OA-Admin-Menu-Section-check]: The script tried to execute a method or access a property of an incomplete object. Please ensure that the class definition "Plugins_admin_oxMarket_oxMarketChecker" of the object you are trying to operate on was loaded _before_ unserialize() gets called or provide a __autoload() function to load the class definition in /path/to/my/AdminMenu/folder/Section.php on line 348

Hey Devon,
That looks like something has gone wrong with the cached menu objects, can you try deleting the following files from the /path/to/openx/var/cache folder:
cache_ADMIN_Menu
cache_ADVERTISER_Menu
cache_MANAGER_Menu
cache_TRAFFICKER_Menu
That should fix the problem, can you describe the upgrade procedure you used (email chris.nutting@openx.org) and the version you upgraded from…

Looks really great. I had no issues with the beta and would love to run it in a production site. Is there any available information when the productionready 2.7 will be available? Thanks
