OpenX Ad Server 2.8 - Feedback Please!

by Scott Switzer on April 6th, 2009

Hello,

I spent some time on our IRC chatroom discussing the release of the new downloadable version of OpenX Ad Server (OpenX Download 2.8). It was great to hear from the developers about how the new UI is being received and which additional features they’d like us to consider.

The best way for OpenX to continue building ad products that publishers love is to get continuous, constructive feedback from the community, and to incorporate it into our future product roadmap.

OpenX Download 2.8 has been out in the wild for a few days now and we’re eager to hear what you think:

1. What new features of v2.8 do you find really useful?
2. How has OpenX Ad Server made an impact on your business?
3. What are the additional features you’d like to see in future versions?
4. What else can we provide to make OpenX more useful to you as you build your online business?
5. Are you using the API or plugin framework to do something interesting?

We will not only use this information for future product roadmaps, but also to build case studies about how folks use OpenX to optimize their ad serving.

Please either leave your feedback in the comments, or contact us. Your feedback is truly appreciated!

  1. We are scheduled to install version 2.8 this week still (as soon as we get approved downtime) - but the features I would like to see in 2.9

1.) Forecasting - being able to see how much of your inventory has been sold so you don’t oversell your inventory
2.) A report writer - being able to pick and choose stats which you would like to see and then compiling the report - in any format.

  2. Performance improvements would be at top priority of my wish list.

We serve about 6,5M impressions each day and immediately after upgrading OpenX to 2.8 I noticed that I need to order new, more powerful server as the load just continued grow and grow…

  3. So far so good - great updates to the UI with navigation greatly improved especially when moving from Campaigns/ Ads to Websites / Zones.

I’m looking forward to the Yield Management (as soon as I can find it!)

More feedback as I dig deeper!
    Great work-

  7. some wishes for a next version:
    - media planning tool (probably too dificult to please everyones need tho, but a simple calendar showing used/free slots would already be a good start)
    - improved reports (i.e. in the direction of reports generated by commercial solutions like DART)
    - new adtype plugins (i.e. streaming video ad)
    - advanced delivery limitations (i.e. “browser does support (javascript|flash|featurexy)”, “screensize” and the such)
    - timed compagnion ads (start ad in zone x and y simultaneously)
    - campaigns with multiple delivery periods (start/end time) including exact time (hours & minutes)

  10. We are using the OpenX hosted version, which is very slow. To set html banners we were using the “Duplicate” function selecting the key Control several times, in order to open new tabs with the copies at once. In this way, we were working with 5 or 6 banners at the same time, and this was a good way to deal with the long update times. Now we can’t do it any more, which makes very difficult to set new ads.

I know the problem is not with the functionality, but with the OpenX site speed.

Apart form this issue, that is not a minor one, for us the software is great and very useful.

  11. I am using the OpenX hosted version. Please make an option to resend the welcome email to new advertisers.

  12. Tried to install 2.8 three times, can’t get the default plugins to install via the installer nor manually. Looked in forums —issue is under discussion but no fix yet. Reverting to version 2.6.3.

  13. hi
someone have feedback on the field about the improvements of distributed statistics?

  14. Hi,
we Installed 2.8 and so far we have some issues with GeoTargeting, since it is not working accurately. We have people in different countries monitoring the banners and it does not match always the rules we set. Even waiting the cache time. Also, when you add rules with AND | OR expressions, the system seems to ignore some of them.

  15. This system is very slowly, i set 1hour 1 banner. I check this on server on localhost but this is identicaly.

  16. I was previously using an old Version of PHPadsNew. I installed openX 2.8 clean install.. a few issues with defualt plugins but I installed those and it works great! So far so good.. the interface is wayyyy easier to navigate now. Setting up campaigns, adverttisers and banners is a breeze… I noticed a few bugs with dropdowns not working right and setting a start and end date on campaigns has a bug for me. Having some difficulty setting up a email zone which was the main reason i upgraded to 2.8.. overall its really greatly improved but still kinda buggy at the moment.

  17. we would like the inventory forecasting (a report on sellable and booked inventory) and revised companion ad delivery which dont block zones which are not linked to a companion campaign

    Comment by mokono — June 11, 2009 @ 3:00 pm

  18. Forecasting!

Given all the campaigns booked into the system, how much more can I sell, on what days?

That’s the one big feature we’d really like to see.

  19. I am using the hosted version on both dreamhost and on a local machine and it is too slow. I have to wait anywhere from 3 to 9 seconds for any page on OpenX to load.

    Comment by Alexander — October 3, 2009 @ 5:39 pm

  20. Get your obnoxious adds off my email.

In addition, get your offensive slowness off my email.

Your disgusting wait time slows everybody down.

    Waiting for {bid.openx.net} anyone????????
