Openads was indirectly slashdotted this morning in an article about Google facing antitrust charges associated with the purchase of DoubleClick. In the post, Openads was introduced as an Open Source alternative to the DoubleClick adserver and as a consequence we’ve been getting a lot of interest.
We just wanted to say hello to the slashdot readers and give an open invitation: Ask us a question about Openads… we’ll make sure to respond.

How do I advertise with Openads?
I can not find it on the site.

I still don’t understand. Installing this I can have my own ad server… does this means advertisers will have to subscribe directly in my site, or is there a centralized advertiser subscription for the community?

Does someone have an idea of the limit of OpenAds ?
Is it possible to deliver 20 000 000 ads a day ?
Thanks
JM

Hi,
Openads is not an ad network, but an ad server software allowing you to manage banners and view statistics for as many websites as you wish, allowing you to sign up to as many ad networks as you want and manage them all in one place. It also allows you to create banners and provide other publishers with your banner invocation code so that you can track how many people are viewing and clicking on your banners

Hi Charlie
You’re correct that installing Openads gives you an adserver and that the next next step is to find some ads to display.
It’s often useful to start with some ad networks since it’s easy to sign up and you can start making money straight away…. but forming relationships directly with advertisers will yield better revenue.
There’s lots of info on the website about this, here are some quick links:

Hi JM
We know of many Openads publishers serving billions of ads each month (which translates to well above 20M ad imps a day). At those levels you would have more than one server for ad serving including a dedicated database server.

Yes, of course.
And the technologies used in OpenAds doesn’t make that possible ?
Do you know if someone tested it ?

Hi JM,
Openads can be used reliably to server billions of ads each month. I’m not sure I understood your question this time, you might want to clarify?
cheers, Oliver

A popular feature of Openads for serving high volumes is the ‘Distributed statistics’ feature which allows for easy database replication across multiple servers, with 1 central server. You can easily scale by adding more slave servers, and if 1 server goes down your delivery will continue fine.

Sorry, my fault.
Confusion between billion and million …

Can you clarify - do I need to have my own server to use Openads on my site? Or can it be hosted on an Openads server?
Comment by Daniel — August 22, 2007 @ 9:19 pm
You need to install Openads on a server, we do not currently offer a hosted solution
