Making Openads Easy to Use, Part I

by amit.shah on August 1st, 2007

A while ago we asked our publishers for feedback on how to make Openads easier to use. Many users said that integration with leading content management systems would give them more time to focus on ad revenue management instead of technology integration. Naturally, we then decided that we should focus our integration efforts on the most popular CMS to start. The results, shown below, surprised us.

Graph of most popular content management systems

It appears that even today in the middle of 2007 more than half of all users are still building their own customized content management solutions or using solutions we never heard of before. Also, it appears there still isn’t a clear market leader in the field.

Of course we realise our data sample might be skewed towards developers who love to program in php and publishers who want to manage their own technology. But we are still happy to see that the two most popular systems in our poll of publishers are from our open source friends at Drupal and Joomla! Does anyone use closed source applications anymore?

In the coming months we hope to release plug-ins to a number of different content management systems but who comes next after Joomla and Drupal is still unclear. Any suggestions??

  1. Integration with Expression Engine (http://www.expressionengine.com) would be awesome. They have a huge community and I know that users would love this integration.

Thanks for OpenAds, and keep up the great work.

  2. I guess it’s a good Idea to integrate with smarty-template engine http://smarty.php.net/. Many developers use Smarty and a simple plugin would probably help a lot…

  5. Doesn’t CMS Made Simple use Smarty? Half of my company’s websites use Joomla, but it didn’t work out, so the rest of our sites we’re making with CMS Made Simple. We use OpenAds on all of them — and I’m also hoping to integrate OpenAds on another CMS Made Simple site I’m working on independently.

  6. Integration with Joomla, Drupal, or Wordpress would any or all be outstanding. ANY INTEGRATION would be spectacular. I know for me, Joomla is the back-end of choice now - easy to deploy, easy to modify, and commercial and GNU developers offer a multitude of products.

I’m downloading OpenAds (was looking for phpAdsNew - silly me) right now for distro on several Joomla sites

  9. Does your OpenAds install have to be on the same server as the Joomla install (like localhost sort of) or can it be remote on a whole seperate network?

  14. I have deployed OpenAds numerous times and love it. I have standardized on OpenAds for serving ads and I have now standardized on Expression Engine to serve as our proffered content management system.

Building hooks for these two applications will be immensely beneficial to shops that seek to deliver best of class solutions with reduced development overhead.

I look forward to seeing it happen.
