Coming this week: OpenX 2.8.2

This week we will introduce OpenX 2.8.2, the latest version of the OpenX Ad Server. We will first launch the new version on OpenX Hosted on Tuesday (update: see 2.8.2 upgrade schedule).  We’ll then make it available for download a few days after. It will include a number of improvements to the delivery of contract campaigns, as well as various security updates and bug fixes. You can expect the following enhancements with the new OpenX 2.8.2 release.

  • Improvements to ad delivery - With OpenX 2.8.2, we have made a number of changes to the delivery engine to ensure the proper allocation of ads across contract campaigns. The resulting improvements will reduce the occurrence of under-delivery and over-delivery for all contract campaigns.
  • Improvements to campaigns using companion positioning - Prior to OpenX 2.8.2, once a “companion” campaign served one ad on a page, it prevented any other campaigns from serving ads on the page, regardless of whether the companion campaign could fill all of the page’s ads itself. In OpenX 2.8.2, we’ve fixed this behavior, so if there are ads on the page that the companion campaign is unable to serve, they will be offered to other campaigns (helping you avoid serving blanks).
  • Security updates - We have completed a number of critical security updates to the ad server in OpenX 2.8.2 to reduce any potential vulnerabilities in the software.

In addition to these enhancements, we’ve made numerous additional performance improvements and bug fixes. Be sure to check out the release notes when they’re made available on Thursday.

If you are using OpenX Hosted, there’s more. In addition to upgrading the OpenX Hosted platform to OpenX 2.8.2 on Tuesday, we will be making further improvements throughout the next two weeks to significantly improve your experience on OpenX Hosted (update: see Market Plugin upgrade schedule).

  • OpenX Market UI updates - This week, we’ll be updating how OpenX Hosted integrates with OpenX Market. You will be able to use tools like the OpenX Market Quickstart page and the Ad Quality Tool, which we previously launched for downloaded users (see this blog post). You will also be able to view details like your payment history.
  • New and improved ad prioritization - Next week, we will be going live with a new process for prioritizing campaigns in OpenX Hosted. We’ve spent a number of months rewriting this process and have already rolled it out to some OpenX Enterprise Hosted clients with great success. With the new process in place, campaigns will deliver more accurately, the admin UI will be faster, and the system will prioritize contract campaigns in near real-time.
  • New and improved reporting infrastructure - There will also be a number of updates to the way statistics are processed, making OpenX Hosted more in line with IAB requirements (we are in the final stages of certifying our Hosted platforms as IAB compliant). These changes will set the stage for further performance improvements to all statistics screens down the line.

We’re confident these updates will significantly improve performance and usability for all of you. Be sure to watch for them this coming week and as always we’ll be looking forward to hearing your feedback.

  4. So I’m not serving any ads right now…. not sure what’s going on. Anyone care to fill me in? I know its during the maintenance time window, but they said ad serving WOULDN’T be affected.

  5. Is ad delivery really not being impacted? We have a large chunk of our ad rotation (both website and newsletter) rendering broken links and broken images, as of this hour.

  7. My site is relatively low traffic, but damn, I’d never use openX hosted if I had real inventory.

    This is seriously so amateurish.

  14. My ads are running intermittently… thinking about moving offa open x in the next 24 hours and just doing Google Ad Manager since it’ll work assuredly.

  15. Well, same here…
No ad or 1 of 4… Hope this is just for a few hours, and because of the update.
Hosted openx will greatly suffer from this. Just not reliable !

  17. Our ads are also not appearing and this is a HUGE problem being that we have quite a few advertisers. I’m just waiting for the angry calls to come pouring in. Any idea when this issue will be resolved???

  18. All our ads are down. I know OpenX hosting is a free product but this is unacceptable. What is going on?

    Comment by Tom — October 14, 2009 @ 3:08 pm

  19. Geez… Did you guys just totally Give up???

I just read this after I noticed that I haven’t had any stats reported ALL WEEK (Not one impression recorded since the weekend!!!) and no ads showing on site now.

Luckily you guys are hosting only 10 domains for me there with a combined total of 15,000 monthlies… If I still had my old site hosted there now, Worth 1 million monthly, I’d have KILLED MYSELF right now with all this downtime…

Worst of all, you aren’t answering anyone back about this… You look like you packed up shop and decided to sell used cars instead or something!

You haven’t even given us an excuse why here, nor on your hosted bugs thread on your forum, here:

    http://forum.openx.org/index.php?showforum=80

I’m going to look into a self-hosted solution now. This is completely unacceptable.

  20. We acknowledge that there was a period this afternoon during which delivery issues arose. We’ve since addressed the problem and delivery is now stable as of 4:30 pm PDT. We apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced during that time.

  22. What’s going on now? The ads have disappeared again. They were working last night and this morning. You people don’t even have the courtesy to answer the many e-mails I have sent.

  23. So…what is the deal today, do you guys understand this is how we make a living. If we don’t have any ads showing on our site we don’t make money, how do I feed my kids? seriously!

  29. Such a vexacious lot aren’t you! For those who are paying for OpenX and experiencing problems, I feel for you. For the bludgers, you hang in packs don’t you… Go for the smart free stuff then cut its throat when they have a glitch. How nice to be perfect. Why don’t you ungrateful farts try building your own software and then see who’s so high and mighty. Or if that’s not your thing, go spend the money on your products before biting the hand that feeds. Feeding your kids!? Really? So important and yet you chose free software for such a critical component in your life. Pathetic.
