OpenX Mobile Ad Server

by Scott Switzer on December 12th, 2008

One of the wonderful things about open source software is the fact that the publisher has complete control over the product - if there is a feature missing, it can be built without waiting and hoping your feature request will make it on the product roadmap.

An interesting customisation of OpenX was done by Citex Software, from Cairo, Egypt. They built Adhere, a modified version of OpenX that serves SMS ads, as well as ads for mobile devices. Very cool!

There are a number of companies and individuals who have been asking OpenX to provide mobile functionality. As part of our private OpenX 2.7 beta release (so private, it was only blogged on Twitter :) ), we are building a group of community members (including some of the folks from Citex Software) to help push forward mobile functionality.

It is early days, but you can check out the mobile project home here. If you want to be involved in the Mobile project, (or any other projects for that matter), please make sure to get an OpenX ID (you can do this by registering for the forums), and post a message in the plug-in forum with the project of interest. (In time this will become more automated).

Well done, Citex Software, and here is a call to start contributing your ideas and developer skills so that OpenX can become as popular on mobile devices as we are on the web!

  1. Another example where the world of Open Source moves faster.

It will be interesting to find out how the SMS ad serving works in terms of connecting to a protocol to deliver the SMS messages. That could be something that smaller advertisers would appreciate, both in local and national areas.

  2. Jase - Agree. Does this mean you want to be a part of the mobile community? :) I am sure the folks from Adhere can give you more information on SMS delivery. You can send them private messages via OpenX - I linked to their usernames in the post above.

  3. This is really awesome… and interesting at the same time. but this is obviously a trade of as you need to configure it (and maybe change some code) in order to make it reliable on your local phone network

    :)

  4. Scott and All, Thanks for the positive feedback. The current release of Adhere is just a piece of the mobile advertising pie. We started developing it with SMS tagging in mind, but we’re already beyond that. The objective is for Adhere to become a comprehensive mobile advertising solution. An obvious next step is to support mobile web ads and click through tracking, which is similar (maybe just re-enabling) to exisiting OpenX functionality. Other channels such as audio/video calls (ringback tone, in-call, and end-of-call advertising) are also in the plans.

emudojo is right, integration with mobile operators infrastructure and satisfying their availability requirements will require extra effort. Also, unlike the web, most (I think all) mobile advertising channels aren’t free so experimenting with them can be costly.

Our Adhere team is very excited by the attention our product is receiving so far and we look forward to receiving your feedback, requirements, help with work prioritization, … :-)

  5. Hussein, is anyone using Adhere for live campaigns currently (anyone you can name in public)? I’d be interested to learn whether the main users are content publishers, ad networks, or operators. (Maybe all of the above.)

  13. The connection to operators is a challenging task because each group of Mobile operators uses different protocols for sending messages. However, this is not a big deal as long as Adhere uses well defined interfaces between its different components and It seems that Adhere team has taken this point into consideration.
